Define the SMTP Server
This section with review how to configure the setting for your SMTP server. This will only need to be configured once as it is then saved globally throughout the product.
- Open the Goliath Console
- Click the Settings link in the top right hand corner
- In the User & Security section, select the option for Email SMTP Setup
- A new window will open, on this page you will define the following:
- Specify the SMTP Servers where emails should be sent for transmission. This can be an IP address or a domain name.
- The default port for the SMTP Server is 25, to override this default port, append a colon character followed by the port number. For example, to use port 44 it would be formatted like 192.168.1.100:44 or mail:26.
- Popular SMTP Servers:
- Office 365: smtp.office365.com:587
- GMAIL: smtp.gmail.com:587 or smtp.gmail.com:465
- SendGrid: smtp.sendgrid.net:587, smtp.sendgrid.net:2525, smtp.sendgrid.net:465
- Popular SMTP Servers:
- Specify multiple SMTP server addresses, separated by a semi-colon, as alternates. The first SMTP server address specified is treated as the primary, and all Email alerts will be sent to this server first. If sending an Email is unsuccessful, then the second SMTP server address specified is tried as an alternate, and so on.
- The default port for the SMTP Server is 25, to override this default port, append a colon character followed by the port number. For example, to use port 44 it would be formatted like 192.168.1.100:44 or mail:26.
- Use the dropdown menu to select the Security Type
- If your mail server is using the default port of 25, chose No Security
- Popular SMTP Server Security Types:
- Office 365: TLS
- GMAIL: TLS (port 587) or SSL (port 465)
- SendGrid: TLS (port 587 & 2525) or SSL (port 465)
- Specify the originating Email address in the format of name@mydomain.com
- If No Security is defined as the Security Type, then this doesn't need to be a valid email address in your environment.
- Is SSL or TLS is chosen as the Security Type, then this does need to be a valid email address in your environment.
- If your SMTP Server requires authentication, check the box at the bottom of the page and enter the username and password credentials for the originating email address in the two fields. The username must be in the format of name@mydomain.com.
- NOTE: Email accounts that require multi-factor authentication are not supported for sending notifications from the GPM Server.
- Specify the SMTP Servers where emails should be sent for transmission. This can be an IP address or a domain name.
- When finished, click the OK button
- The Goliath server will then validate a connection to the SMTP server
- An error will appear if a connection can not be made. Double check the settings configured for typos, confirm firewall is open and the Goliath Server is whitelisted.
In addition to the above steps, the SMTP Server can also be defined within any monitoring rule via the Notifications - Email tab by clicking the button SMTP Server Parameters for all Email.

Appendix
Macro Substitution
The email Subject and Custom Text fields for Email and SMS Text Notifications support fourteen Macros that are substituted with the appropriate data for a particular alert when it occurs. The parameters are case sensitive and must be upper case.
- &N: which is replaced by the name of the server/device causing the alert
- &A: which is replaced by the IP Address of the server/device causing the alert
- &W: which is replaced by the name of the Monitoring Rule
- &S: which is replaced by the Status message associated with this failure causing the alert status information is source dependent and differs based upon the watch type.
- For Example:
- ServerWatch: 429 Mb memory free; 2% available
- ProcessWatch: Process not running no restart attempted
- EventLogWatch: Event ID, Source, & Description
- GAAM: The full simulation details log
- For Example:
- &D: which is replaced by the date of the alert
- &T: which is replaced by the time of the alert
- &P: which is replaced by the Server/Device Description
- &O: which is replaced by the Server/Device Notes
- &G: which is replaced by the name of the Group that the Server/Device belongs
- &C: which is replaced by the Group Description
- &R: which is replaced by the Monitoring Rule ‘Description’ text
- &L: which is replaced by the for the Monitoring Rule ‘Severity’ level
- &E: which is replaced by the for the Monitoring Rule Notes
- &V: (only for CounterWatch)is replaced by the Counter value that exceeded the threshold and caused an alert.
The Email Address field supports the macro &G which is used in conjunction with Email Groups where one would define an email group to represent each primary group and the respective email addresses who would receive the notifications for the servers/devices assigned to those groups. Note, the parameter is case sensitive and must be upper case.
For example, say user1 wants to receive alerts for only machines in the SQL Servers primary group. User2 wants to receive alerts only for machines in the Exchange primary group.
For this scenario you would:
- Create an email group which contains the name of the primary group (ie "email_SQL Servers" and "email_Exchange") and add the relevant email address(es) to the respective groups.
- Within the applicable monitoring rule(s), in the Email Address field you would enter email_&G
- When the alert triggers for a machine in the SQL Server group, GPM will see that the email is to be sent to the recipients included in the email group email_SQL Servers
Email Groups
This section reviews how to use the Email Group functionality in Goliath. Overall, this functionality allows on to create a group of emails/phone numbers and give it an identifying so that one doesn’t have to create a comma delimited list each time they want to enable notifications.
- Open a monitoring rule and navigate to the ‘Notifications’ tab
- Click the ‘Email Groups’ button to select and or manage your email groups
- From the Select and Manage Email Groups pop-up, you can will a drop down list of the current email groups configured. If there are no email groups configured the drop down will be blank. One can:
- To add an email group to the Email Address field, use the dropdown menu to choose the desired group and then click the ‘Select’ button to add it
- To edit an existing email group, click the ‘Manage’ button. A new window will appear, use the dropdown list at the top to choose the group you would like to edit and then click the ‘Edit’ button at the bottom of the page. From there one can define the group name and add in the recipients.
- To create a new email group, click the ‘Manage’ button. A new window will appear, click the ‘New’ button at the bottom of the page. From there one can then add/remove emails/phone numbers
